    Minister’s response leaves Yea mystified

    July 29, 2016

State Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish MP has slammed the Andrews Labor government for refusing to install electronic 40km/h speed signs at Yea Primary School.

“Yet again Daniel Andrews’ city centric government is refusing to listen to rural and regional communities. The government’s decision to not fund safety upgrades in Yea is mystifying given the importance of keeping students and residents safe on our roads,” Ms McLeish said.

After writing to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan in May this year, a response was supplied this month denying the community’s request for electronic 40km/h speed signs.

“The Minister claimed that electronic signs are not the solution to the dangerous situation in Yea and has said VicRoads will continue to ‘facilitate discussion’ in conjunction with Murrindindi Shire and Victoria Police.”

“Locals know best about how heavy fog and bad weather effects road safety. The Minister has yet again showed that he has no regard for the Yea community’s knowledge and experience and for public safety.”

Ms McLeish first raised the issue in the Victorian Parliament in October last year.

“On numerous occasions I have asked the government to commit to improving safety for students and residents in Yea and the community have organised a petition calling for action.”

“The Minister has had ample opportunity to listen to the community, but he refuses to set foot in Yea. As a result, safety will continue to be put at risk,” Ms McLeish said.

Ms McLeish concluded saying, “I will continue to work with our community to convince the government it needs to improve safety in Yea before it is too late.”
