Yea scores safety win

 State Liberal Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish MP has announced that electronic 40km/hr speed signs will be installed in front of Yea Primary School following a two year campaign to improve road safety.

“I am delighted that the campaign to improve safety in Yea has been recognised by the Victorian Government and that it has agreed to install electronic 40km/hr signs on the Melba Hwy at Yea Primary School,” Ms McLeish said.

In a letter to Ms McLeish sent on 17 February, Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan indicated that the new speed signs will be installed soon.

“VicRoads have considered the circumstances of the location and in recognition of the traffic volume on the Highway, the often inclement weather and the presence of the flagged crossing, will be installing electronic speed signs to enhance the prominence of the school speed zone.”

“These will be installed in early 2017.”

Ms McLeish said that in spite of the recent good news, action should have been taken earlier.

“For some time, the school had been trying to deal with VicRoads on this matter, with little success. Representatives of the school felt like they were being ignored”, Ms McLeish said.

 “On numerous occasions I have asked the government to commit to improving safety for students and residents in our region and have organised a petition calling for action.”

“At every turn the Government has been obstinate and has refused to listen. This is a great breakthrough for our community,” Ms McLeish concluded.
